Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka yesterday went wild in jubilation as Anambra born Philanthropist, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo announced his readiness to build a befitting bus park for the institution.
Engr. Onunkwo made this announcement at a one-day Transport workshop organized by the Directorate of Transport (DOT) under the Students Union Government (SUG) where over a thousand students, bus, tricycle drivers were all in attendance.
The students through their President, Comrade Joseph Okafor and the DOT leader, Comrade Dirichi-Pat Mmesirionye had cried unto the guests including Engr. Onunkwo to take up the construction of a befitting bus park for the staff and students as the park had been neglected and currently constitutes an eye-sore to people. According to them, the park serves both staff, students and visitors of the University explaining that its deplorable state constitutes a speck of great dirt on the image of the University. They pleaded with the dignitaries to assist the University in doing the needful.
Addressing the students, Engr. Onunkwo, an alumnus of the University who had earlier visited the park expressed shock at the deplorable state of the major park used daily by the University community. Commending the students for such a lofty programme, reminded them that they wield enormous power which they are unaware of. According to him, “Nigerian students are not aware of the enormous powers they possess if only they can unite. When united, there is nothing you want in the institution you cannot attract. I encourage you all to work in unison as this is only when your voice can be heard and equally respected.”
Addressing the request of the students, Engr. Onunkwo announced that he would not only build a befitting bus park for the students, but the project would also commence in the first week of September 2019 and would be commissioned before the year runs out.
Expressing happiness over the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone, FAS commended Engr. Onunkwo for becoming a partner in progress in uplifting his alma mater. Professor Esimone who was represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Stan Udedi maintained that with the completion of the bus park, Engr. Onunkwo would have solved one of the biggest challenges bothering the students who are the major users of the park. The Vice-Chancellor commended the SUG for initiating the programme.
It is noteworthy that the Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation partnered with the SUG Directorate in organizing the colourful event.
