Lives and properties worth billions of Naira were on Wednesday razed down by an inferno caused by a fallen petrol truck along Ochanja Market, Onitsha in Anambra state.

The fire which according to onlookers raged for over four hours without response from the Anambra State Fire Service. However, the intervention of their counterparts from Delta state aided in containing the fierce and fury inferno.

Commiserating with the families and friends who lost members and goods over the sad incidence, a frontline Oil Mogul and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo bemoaned the lack luster attitude of the state government through the Fire Service in containing such disaster.

Engr. Onunkwo averred that fire disasters in the state has continued to grow in geometric progression with little or no pragmatic efforts from the state government in curtailing these incidents.

He equally bemoaned the reckless driving of most motorists on the high way leading to preventable casualties while calling on the relevant sectors including the FRSC to be on the alert always.

In his words, “I received the news of the inferno that maimed and ruined lives and properties worth millions of Naira in rude shock. In all sincerity, my heart goes out to the family members of those who had been cut off in their prime in this ugly and painful incident.

“I equally commend strongly the young men and women who joined in the rescue efforts in salvaging the situation.

“The issue of fire disaster is almost becoming a recurring decimal in our beloved state with little or no efforts being made in equipping the Fire Service to meet up with the challenges of their work.

“It is painful that concerted efforts are not being made to forestall greater damages when incidences like this occur.

“The Fire Service should be up and doing as lives and properties lost can never be recovered.

“May God grant the souls of our great sons and daughters who lost their lives in this inferno. May God equally grant their family members and friends the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones”, he asserted.
